Her nearly full page inscription to a student, "Phyllis", is warm and encouraging: "You have been an ideal pupil, attentive, quick, intelligent, and talented. With that combination you can go to the very top...don't neglect you're outside forward edge....Good Luck and come back to me soon! Love, Maribel. April 15, 1940". The students of this beloved teacher & coach included Tenley Albright who won five U.S. titles & the first Olympic Games gold medal for an American in ladies figure skating. She also taught Frank Carroll who himself went on to become one of America's top skating instructors and 6 members of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team (that entire team, including Mrs. Vinson and her daughter and namesake, Maribel, who won the United States figure skating Pairs title with partner Dudley S. Richards, died in a tragic airlane crash enroute to the compition carsed with all aboard lost. . These national championships were broadcast on television for the first time. In that same competition, her younger daughter, 16-year-old Laurence, won the ladies Singles championship and also died in the plane crash on the way to the World Championships in 1961). I still remember hearing the news on television, and how numb and shocked I was.
