Vaguely Sherlockian in that it involves one "S. Holmes, Private Inquiry Agent" who is not related to THE Sherlock Holmes and who exhibits no discernable ability as a detective. A pencilled note on the front free endpaper from the late Berkeley bookseller, Peter Howard states: "Second edition, 2 years after the first BUT we note with interest that the title page is a cancel and presume that this is actually the first edition, second state, with the original sheets and a new title page".
