Orchard was convicted of planting the bomb which killed Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg during the Coeur d'Alene labor wars. He implicated leaders of the Western Federation of Miners in the crime, which led to the famous Moyer, Haywood & Pettibone trial in which the W.F.M. leaders were acquitted after being defended by Clarence Darrow. Orchard was "born again" while in the penitentiary.
