J. B. McChesney was a friend of Mead's and is mentioned in his book. After McChesney's death Mead briefly succeeded him as principal of Oakland High School. This book contains much interesting material about the temperance movement in California where Meads was a prominent activist and one-time candidate for Governor on the Prohibition Party ticket.
