Winwood Reade "was not 'an Atheist,' as the 'Dict. of Nat. Biog.' says, but a Spencerian Agnostic. He gave the name of God to the 'First Cause and Inscrutable Mystery,' rejected the idea of immortality, and was very drastically opposed to Christianity.
