His "Crusaders for American Liberalism" (1938) is a standard work on the muckrakers. This particular book was runner-up in the non-fiction category of "American Spectator" magazine's J. Gordon Coogler Award for Worst Books. The conservative journal referred to it as a "mere rectangle of idiot pulp"
