Free Charles Manson

(MANSON, Charles)

to Cart

(Lawrence, Kansas): No publisher given, ca. 1968. Pin-back button measuring 1 3/4" in diameter. Some minor spotting. [17707]

This button, which bears a photo of Manson, was issued at a time when he was regarded as a revolutionary hero by some segments of the American Left, including the Weatherman faction of S.D.S., who were wont to refer to 1968 as being the "Year of the Fork." Producing the buttons was conceived of as a fundraising tool by the staff of a Lawrence underground newspaper, who believed that Manson was being framed for murder by the government. The pins were created to raise consciousness about the case and to raise money for their paper. The public response was underwhelming and only about 20 were sold.
