The Good Soldier

No place: No publisher stated, ca. 1913-16. 3 3/4 x 8 3/8 in. Broadside. A couple of tiny chips at edges; else very good. Scarce. [98855]

Anti-militarist tract which was published in various formats in the years just prior to U.S.entry into the Great War, most prominently in the "International Socialist Review" of October, 1913. It was also issued by the "Appeal to Reason" on December 15, 1915 (see Woodbridge), with later issues being prefaced with a statement headlined: "Censored by the Postmaster General." Not noted as a separate item in BAL but is discussed under No. 11967. London later denied authorship in a leaflet issued by the Navy Department, referring to the tract a "canard" of German origin. Joan London ("Jack London: An Unconventional Biography") casts doubt on this denial.

Price: $95.00
