One-page Letter, Dated August 10, 1943, to Robert E. Bush, Monetary Reformer of St. Helena, California

[63038]

Arps was an accountant and auditor from Modesto, California and a monetary reformer. The letter, on Arp's letterhead which reproduces a photo of him, discusses the "Money Question," which, Arp maintains, is a "ticklish job to enlighten people on." He states that he has been investigated by the F.B.I. who tried to link him with George W. Christians and the Silver Shirts but he was able to "bamboozle it all over" them. He discusses his campaigns for public office in California and his relations with Upton Sinclair, whose organization "branded him a COMMUNIST." He dismisses Jerry Voorhis as a "POLITICIAN WHO POSSESSES NO G U T S -- He has sold us down the river every turn in the road." The Ham & Eggs plan, however, is said to be "within one step of the SUBLIME." He concludes with a paragraph touting the "Ambero System of Social Credits."
Also included is a mimeographed copy of a letter from Arps to William G. von Oppen about the Ambero System. Arps has pencilled in the margin: "Mr Von Oppen was kidnapped - and spirited away without a trial and is probably being punished in an insane asylum today. Ed." Also included are carbon typescript copies of letters from Arps to A. P. Gianinni & to Donald Shea. The latter seems to promote a John Bricker candidacy for President and SAYS THE FOLLOWING: "Nail Morgenthau to the cross with the statement that he is going to repudiate the DEBTS of the U.S. while BRICKER will redeem them honestly and on the square. Then Bricker has him trapped where he can't extricate himself. With this setup Bricker can move into the lime light and I don't mean MAY-BE." Arps signs his letters "Yours for the 'FIFTH FREEDOM' (FREEDOM FROM LEGALIZED STEALING), Edward Arps - An Ex-Banker." Bush was a longtime monetary reformer and was California State Secretary of the People's Party in the 1890s.
