Budenz, who lived in St. Louis during the 1910s, was a leader of the Conference for Progressive Labor Action and the American Workers Party, joining the Communist Party in 1935 and serving as managing editor of the "Daily Worker" before converting to Catholicism in 1945 and becoming a professional anti-Communist.
