THE MELTING POT

New Series. [111382]

14 issues of this monthly St. Louis socialist magazine edited by Henry M. Tichenor. Although he was associated with such local socialists as Katrer Richards O'Hare and Phil Wagner of the "National Rip-Saw," Tichenor was more interested in Freethought than in socialism. Early issues of "The Melting Pot" reflected his interests. Under ther impetus of the Russian Revolution, however, the magazine became a red hot Bolshevik journal. Its subetital was changed from "A Rationalist Journal of Ineternational Socialism" to "An Exponent of International Communism" with issue of May, 1919. Early in 1920 the magazine ran into financial troubles and was abrwuptly moved to Fort "Worth with the July issue. Apparently Tichenor's revolutionary ardor had cooled by this time and the magazine returned to his previous pursuites, additionionly taking on a Southern flavor by running a number of oil lease advertisements and articles by Tom Watson and one entitled "Can the White Race Survive?" which commented favorably on the racial views of Lothrop Stoddard.
