A Letter from H. P. Lovecraft to Clark Ashton Smith
9 x 5 1/2 inches. 2-page ALs postmarked 8/14/31 and SIGNED "Ech - Pi - El." Bound in a pamphlet format with spine and with attached wraparound band reading "H. P. Lovecraft. A Hologaph Letter" on front panel & "H. P. Lovecraft" vertically on spine.The letter itself is inserted loosely in an acetate sleeve. The original mailing envelope with an 8/14/31 postmark from Providence, R.I. on the recto and Lovecraft's signature plus a P.S. on the verso is inserted in a second sleeve. A TLs from Roy Squires to his customer who is identified only as Tom & dated 9/8/75 is laid in. Also included is an envelope printed for this item which reproduces the text of the wraparound band. In his letter Squires states that the Lovecraft letter was at this time "completely unpublished." He further says that the "pencilled date on the letter was written by Clark Ashton Smith." Lovecraft's envelope has been roughly opened at left edge. The letter is in good order. Mr. Squires's pamphlet creation is in fine condition though his envelope exhibits wear at edges. [110012]
