Poindexter was a two-term Republican U.S. Senator from Washington state. Hechler's inscription reads: "To Senator Miles Poindexter, without whose assistance this study would be much less than it is." In the book's acknowledgements the author states: "I spent four gorgeous days in the cool of the Blue Ridge Mountains as the guest of Senator Miles Poindexter. He opened his rich file of correspondence on this period, and we talked far into several nights on all phases of the progressive movement." Poindexter is also mentioned numerous times in the text of the book.
