Richmond Is Indebted to Julia Brown
(BROWN, Mrs. Julia)
Richmond, Va.: Richmond Area TACT, ca. 1970. 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. Broadside .

Price: $25.00

In the spring of 1968, "just prior to his assassination," Martin Luther King, Jr. planned to speak at a "Saturday night jamboree" in Richmond. Since on other occasions "it had appeared evident that Mrs. Julia Brown was peculiarly effective in thwarting similar plans for M.L.K.appearances," arrangements were made to have her in Richmond the night before King's speech - whereupon Dr. King cancelled his appearance. The authors then state: "It is our firm conviction that this community was saved some $100,000 to $1 million (and perhaps some lives) that would inevitably, have resulted from Dr. King's 'non-violent' agitation." TACT, which stands for Truth About Civil Turmoil, was a John Birch Society front group
